Understanding BSR

Purpose

Give context for what BSR actually measures, so the trend charts in Tymmerce are read correctly rather than causing unnecessary alarm.

Who this page is for

Anyone using BSR as a signal for demand or competitive position.

What BSR is

Amazon's Best Sellers Rank is a relative ranking within a category, driven primarily by recent sales velocity — not a direct sales count, and not comparable across different categories. A BSR of 500 in a small category is not equivalent to a BSR of 500 in a huge one.

note

BSR is a relative, recent signal. It reflects sales momentum over roughly the last day or two far more than long-term performance — a single good or bad day can move it noticeably.

How Tymmerce tracks it

Once BSR Tracking is enabled for a product, Tymmerce records its rank on a regular schedule and builds a trend line over time, alongside category context so you can see rank movement independent of category size.

Reading a trend without over-reacting

  • A single-day spike or dip is usually noise, not a signal worth acting on alone.
  • A sustained multi-week trend in either direction is far more meaningful — that's when it's worth investigating pricing, competition, or listing changes.
  • Compare against category-relative movement, not the raw number alone, since whole categories can shift together (e.g. seasonal categories around holidays).

See Trend Analysis for how to read multi-week patterns specifically.

Enabling tracking for a product

Go to the product in Inventory or Product Research and select Track BSR. Tracking starts from that point forward — Tymmerce can't retroactively backfill rank history from before tracking was enabled.
